How much is a fishing license in Ohio?  What is the normal amount of time necessary to purchase one?   Most people will buy them a day or two before the trip.  Some of the more smartphone-savvy individuals can get them easily enough just before the trip at the dock.

Most states, including Ontario, require you to create an account, which involves providing a valid email address and setting up a password. Once that is completed, getting licenses early is a snap.

Always check before the trip to see if there will be a weather issue on the scheduled day, as there may be a cancellation or rescheduling. Need to determine just where you are going to fish.  If you leave Ohio and go into Ontario waters, it's not necessary to have an Ohio license. Licenses are not reciprocal.
When leaving a port located in Ohio waters, and if it is decided to fish in Ontario waters on your trip, as long as you have a valid Ontario license for that day, the individual doesn't need an Ohio license.  Captain Joe will always discuss fishing and license options, usually before you arrive including the area and the morning of the trip.

But as an alternative, going into Ontario waters and searching for walleyes, rates are still the same.  In fact, the exchange rate may make it a better option than Oho sometimes.   When you look at the price for a one-day license in Ontario, it's $24.86 (CA.), and no outdoor card is needed until you purchase a 7-day or seasonal license.  After the exchange (best when purchased online) using a credit card, the rate reduces to just a little over $20.  To fish multiple days on your charter, with the current exchange rate, it's actually a better bargain to get the 7-day Ontario non-resident license/with the outdoor card (which is valid for 3 years).  All in all, when the captain makes the suggestion, oftentimes it'll be a win-win for you and your group.

IMPORTANT WHEN FISHING LAKE ERIE AND CANADIAN WATERS
Important Note: If you do have a license to fish Ontario waters for the days you charter, then a valid Ohio license IS NOT necessary for those days.  So this simply means that Anglers DO NOT have to possess an Ohio license if fish are taken in Canadian waters with a valid Ontario license, and are returned to Ohio waters.  When fishing Ontario waters and returning to Ohio waters, each angler can only possess what the daily individual possession limit that Ohio has set.

The new Ontario fishing license system has made it easier to acquire a 1-day Canadian license before your Lake Erie Charter.  All that’s needed is a computer with internet access and a credit card. Non-resident Canadian fishing license information before you purchase. Begin your Canadian fishing license online purchase.

Be certain of the dates you plan on fishing, as the license is non-refundable once purchased.  When ordering a one-day license, be sure to give them the correct date(s) that you are planning to fish. Licenses can be purchased as late as the morning of the trip. Purchases are made with a credit card. The information needed for each non-resident fishing licensee is as follows: 1) complete name, 2) complete address, 3) date of birth, 4) eye color, 5) height, and 6) gender.

Because Ontario fishing licenses are easy to secure in advance without having to stop on Pelee Island, even in most rough lake conditions, fishing can still be possible.  Pelee is the largest of the Lake Erie islands, which offers anglers adequate protection in its lee. May through October are prime fishing seasons.  A form of border crossing credentials is not necessary to fish in the Ontario waters of Lake Erie.   If you have a passport or an accepted document, please bring it along.

Non-resident Canadian fishing licenses are also available, sent through the mail, or by calling the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources at 1-800-667-1940. However, this method may still be recommended for 7-day or longer licenses.

Be aware that we may fish Canadian waters at times. If fishing is better in Ontario, we would likely go.   Please do not purchase an Ohio license until we have spoken.
